Jerry started running in 1978 as a plan to lose weight while he was in college at Ohio University. It worked, as he lost over 30 pounds and started getting fast. After college he began training with two of the area's top teams (Athlete's Unknown and the Bob Schul Racing Team). With his performances continuing to improve he soon established himself as one of the best runners in the Dayton area. Jerry continued through the years to be one of the most consistent runners the area has ever seen.

He has won dozens of races over the years and is a part of one of the area's all-time best master's rivalries with Englewood's Jack Lintz. Jerry has run over 500 races and routinely either won or placed in either the overall and/or his age group.

Jerry was the co-director for the Wright-Patt Air Force Base 8K for several years.
