As a runner, Tom has reached the pinnacle of success at the high school and college level. Now he is one of the top high school coaches in the state of Ohio.
High School Running
Tom is a 1977 graduate of Trotwood Madison HS where he was a three time State Meet qualifier in track. He was Runner-up in the mile (1976), State Champion in mile (1977), and member of State Team Runner-up (1975). He was also a two time State Meet qualifier in cross country and State cross counrty Champion (1976). His high school PR in the mile was 4:09.1 and he ran a 9:02.4 PR for the two mile.
As a 1981 graduate of Penn State University, Tom compiled some impressive stats while there as part of the track and cross country teams. Tom was a member of the Penn State teams that placed 12th (1977), 4th (1978), 3rd (1980) at the NCAA XC Championships. He was a scorer in all team XC meets for PSU over his four years running there. He was a NCAA All-American DMR (1978). He also was part of the Runner-up team at the Penn Relays in the mile (1976).
As a post-collegiate runner (Athletes in Action), Tom represented the United States at meets in Sweden, Austria, and Finland. He returned to the states and ran a 3:44.0 for 1500 meters in Eugene, Oregon at the Prefontaine Classic (1982).
Tom is the Assistant track coach (2002-2005 ... 2007-present) and Head cross country coach (2006-present). Rom started with 25 boys trying out for cross country in 2006 and since 2012 has had 115-120 come out to run cross cournty each season. He took Mason to their first ever state meet and since then his boys team has made eight consecutive appearances at the State XC Champiionships (2007-2014) and a Team Runner-up finish (2012). His boys team had top ten team finishes in all eight of those years.
Tom's runner, Zach Wills, was a three time (2008-2010) winner at the State XC meet and a two time (2008, 2009) winner in hte 3200 meter on the track. In 2011, the Mason boys team were runners-up in the 4 x 800 relay. Tom also coached Matt Kincaid, who was the runner-up in the 3200 at the State Meet (2011).
